Statement on Court of Appeals Fracking Decision by NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer & Elected Officials to Protect New York
In response to the Court of Appeals decision today affirming the rights of municipalities to ban fracking, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer and Elected Officials to Protect New York co-coordinator Julie Huntsman, Town of Otsego Councilwoman, released the following statement:
“Today, the New York Court of Appeals reaffirmed the long-standing right of local communities to exercise control over land use decisions in order to shape their neighborhoods as they see fit.”
“Our amicus brief in support of local control showed how powerful we can be when citizens, advocates, and elected officials from upstate and downstate stand together to promote community-oriented planning and to raise concerns about threats to our quality of life posed by hydrofracking.”
“Thousands of New Yorkers have raised serious concerns about the effects of fracking on public health, the environment, and their local budgets. As we detailed in our brief, studies increasingly show how the wide-ranging impacts of fracking may not stop at municipal borders, and why statewide protection remains imperative.”
Elected Officials to Protect New York is a non-partisan network of more than 800 current and former elected officials from all 62 New York State counties.
